Proficiency is a short solo work for tenor horn with piano accompaniment. Written for Owen Farr, the work intends to demonstrate the full capabilities of the tenor horn through a number of contrasting sections, each of which being based on the opening theme.A Quirky fast section is followed by a slow, mysterious passage and cadenza before returning to the familiar fast music of the opening. The work continually develops with an abundance of energy and momentum and the soloist has lots of opportunity to demonstrate good technique.
